Agriculture Backpack

For much of its history, Alabama’s economy was based almost entirely on agriculture. Cotton was the most important cash crop in 19th century Alabama, but other crops eventually became important to Alabama’s economy. Alabama’s warm climate and long growing season combined with rich soil of the Black Belt and Tennessee Valley regions are perfect for growing a variety of crops. Students will learn about agriculture and its role in Alabama’s history through the use of primary sources, activities, and hands-on materials.
