Celebrates Opening of New Wing
October 8, 2005

Following three years of construction, the new west wing of the Department of Archives and History in downtown Montgomery is opening for the public. The all-day celebration is free and will feature a wide range of activities. Ribbon-cutting will be at 9:00 am and events will conclude at 4:00 pm. The honor of cutting the ribbon will go to an Alabama fourth grade student, chosen through a statewide contest. A highlight of the day will be a panel discussion featuring the renowned quilters of Gee's Bend.

“We're so excited to be able to provide music, panel discussions, living history encampments, children's activities, crafts demonstrations, and an 'antiques roadshow' for identifying family heirlooms”, stated Leona Stemple, co-chair of the West Wing Fling planning committee. “All of Alabama is invited to join us.”

The Department of Archives and History was created in 1901, the first department of its kind in the country, and it served as a model for other states. The department's mandate is to preserve historic documents and artifacts, to provide educational opportunities, and to maintain resources for research. The west wing remains a work in progress and will grow and develop as an educational and research center for Alabama.

The media will be invited to a preview event on Friday, September30 and media kits will be provided in advance. Unable to attend? Request a media kit after September 16 by calling Sherrie Hamil at 334.353.4712.
