May 6-10, 2002

During the week of May 6, 2002, workers resumed drilling holes for caissons. Holes are usually twenty feet deep. A large metal cylinder is lowered into the hole and a worker is lowered down into the hole to remove excess sand. A "cage" formed of rebar is lowered into place. Then between 11 and 13 yards of concrete are poured into the hole.

May 27-31, 2002

During the week of May 27-31, workers continued to work on the foundation of the new wing. Channels were dug between caissons and concrete was poured. These "mud sills" were laid down in preparation for footings.

Also, workers succeeded in drilling through beneath Adams Avenue from the future site of the physical plant. The tunnel will be gradually enlarged to allow 30" pipes to bring electricity and heating/air conditioning to the new wing.
