Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mia Hamm, Joe Namath, and Bo Jackson are just a few of the many athletes counted among Alabama's greatest -- Join us at noon on Thursday, August 21, as Jennifer Chandler presents, “Alabama Sports Greats and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame,” at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. This ArchiTreats: Food for Thought presentation is scheduled in conjunction with the Alabama Department of Tourism's 2008 Year of Alabama Sports.
The State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (ASHOF) was created in 1967 to commemorate and celebrate the athletic triumphs of Alabama's greatest champions, many of whom have left indelible marks on American sports history. Located in Birmingham, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame houses and displays memorabilia related to the lives and careers of these exceptional individuals. Chandler will share highlights from this outstanding collection.
A native of Langdale, Alabama, Chandler is a champion gold medal diver. She won the 3-Meter Springboard Diving competition at both the 1975 Pan--American Games in Mexico City and the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. She has served as spokesperson for several sports committees, including the United States Olympic Committee and the Women's Sports Foundation. She was named to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985, where she now serves as Director of Outreach Programs.
This ArchiTreats presentation is one in a series of monthly third-Thursday free lectures presented by the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
