TOURS
Sampler Gallery Photostory
Tours are structured according to grade level of students.
Groupings are for 4-6
grades and 7-12 grades.
The primary focus of the "Sampler" tour is to introduce students to the importance of artifacts and to demonstrate how these artifacts can enhance one's knowledge of history. Practical experience in interpreting artifacts is the focus of this tour. Docents encourage students to think critically about the past and to draw comparisons between past and present events.
Students also view a variety of artifacts from the Archives galleries which help us understand and appreciate Alabama history. Items such as a dress that belonged to Civil War heroine Emma Sansom and a portrait of early nineteenth century Creek Indian Chieftain William McIntosh provide insight into Alabama's past.

Secondly, this tour aims to engage students in an
analytical discussion about the objects they see
and what these objects imply about the people who
used them. Docents encourage students to think
critically about the past and to draw
comparisons with the present.
This tour combines examples from major gallery
spaces to show the variety of artifacts and
archival materials at the Archives. Items such as a 19th century register of inmates at the state prison, a collar worn by a slave in Dallas County, and
French wallpaper depicting life in
the "Vine and Olive Colony", provide
insight into Alabama's past.
