NINETEENTH CENTURY LIFE TOURS

Tours are structured according to grade level of students. Groupings are for K-3 grades, 4-7 grades and 8-12 grades.

Nineteenth Century Life: Collections "R" Us (K-3)

  • The primary goal of the "Nineteenth Century Life" tour is to represent the lifestyles of people from this period through artifacts. Stereoscopes, toys, jewelry, medical instruments and household items provide details and help create a contrast to current lifestyles. Students hear a brief presentation, touch objects, and ask questions regarding their usage.
  • This tour's secondary objective is to discuss what people collect and why. Students learn that the Archives has many collections and they are important to future generations.
  • This tour takes place in the "Hands-On Gallery" and includes time in "Grandma's Attic" where students can dress up and examine objects from the past. They may also visit the Nineteenth Century Gallery.
  • 19th Century Gallery Guide

    Nineteenth Century Life: Mysteries of Time (4-7)

  • The primary goal of the "Nineteenth Century Life" tour is to represent the lifestyles of people from this period through artifacts. Stereoscopes, toys, jewelry, medical instruments and household items provide tangible examples which enable the students to compare and contrast 19th and 20th century lifestyles. Students hear a narrative-style presentation, touch objects, and are encouraged to ask questions regarding their relevancy to the lifestyles of the people.
  • This tour's secondary objective is to introduce students to the methods of examining artifacts in order to discover their relevance to history. Students first generate ideas on nineteenth century lifestyles through guided observation. After looking into the past students are encouraged to apply these same methods to the present in order to determine how people in the future will know about us and what clues we will leave for them.
  • 19th Century Gallery Guide

    Nineteenth Century Life: Mysteries of Time (8-12)

  • The primary goal of the "Nineteenth Century Life" tour is to represent the lifestyles of people from this period through artifacts. Stereoscopes, toys, jewelry, medical instruments and household items provide details and help create a contrast to current lifestyles. Students hear a narrative-style presentation and are able to touch artifacts.
  • This tour's secondary objective is to introduce students to the methods of examining artifacts in order to discover their relevance to history. Students first generate ideas on nineteenth century lifestyles through guided observation of materials. After looking into the past students are encouraged to apply these same methods to the present in order to determine how people in the future will know about us and what clues we will leave for them.
  • The "Nineteenth Century Life" tour also makes the older students aware of career opportunities in museums and history-related fields.
