Provenance Reconstruction:

According to a card found with this flag, it was donated to the Alabama Department of Archives and History by Thomas W. Sims of Mobile on July 4, 1907. While this flag was displayed with and mixed in the jumble of fragments donated by Sims, the two flags donated by him have been clearly identified. Perhaps Sims himself was not aware of the presence of this flag at the time of donation.

This flag appears to be a U.S. regimental flag which has been cut up (possibly for souvenirs), burned, and is stained by water. The flag originally had 34 stars but several have been cut away. The flag was manufactured between January 29, 1861 and June 30, 1863 (the dates of annexation of the 34th and 35th states).
