![]() Flag: U.S. National Flag (Printed, 34 Stars)
Provenance Reconstruction: This flag was loaned to the Alabama Department of Archives and History by Dothan Landmarks Foundation Incorporated in August 1991. At that time, Archives' curators examined the flag and transported it to the lab of Textile Preservation Associates, Inc., Sharpsburg, Maryland. There the flag was examined and determined to date from the 1861-1863 period (see conservator's report September 20, 1991). Ownership of the flag was transferred to the Department on July 14, 1993. Historically, printed flags of this type were used for decorative purposes
during political rallies, speeches, etc. This flag would have been manufactured
between January 29, 1861 and June 10, 1863 (the dates of the annexation of the
34th and 35th states). Little else is known concerning the history of this flag
except that the names Arthur Jewell and Mrs. M. Jewell are written on the flag.
The flag was donated to Dothan Landmarks Foundation by W. H. Bradford, 201
South Park, Dothan in December 1983. Since that time, Bradford has moved
leaving no forwarding address.
