![]() ![]() Flag: Admiral Semmes' Flag
Provenance Reconstruction: This flag was presented to Admiral Raphael Semmes following the sinking of the C.
S. S. Alabama off Cherbourg, France, June 19, 1864. It was presented by "Lady
DeHogton and other English ladies." The flag was brought back by Semmes
when he returned to the Confederate States and was inherited by his
grandchildren, Raphael Semmes, III and Mrs. Eunice Semmes Thorington.
Following Mrs. Thorington's death, Raphael Semmes, III donated the flag to the
Alabama Department of Archives and History. It was received on September 16,
1929.
