![]() Flag: 11th Alabama Infantry
Provenance Reconstruction: This flag is an Army of Northern Virginia, 3rd wool bunting issue. Flags of
this issue were manufactured at the Richmond Depot between July 1862 and May
1864. The flag of the 11th Alabama Infantry was captured at the Battle of
Antietam (Sharpsburg) on September 17, 1862 by the 57th New York Volunteers,
Richardson's Division, Sumner's Corps. In the Selma Reporter, November 4,
1862 the flag was described as "badly torn and blood stained." The flag was
eventually forwarded to the U.S. War Department where it was assigned Capture
Number 61. It was returned to the State of Alabama effective March 25, 1905.
