Provenance Reconstruction:

This flag was presented to Admiral Raphael Semmes following the sinking of the C. S. S. Alabama off Cherbourg, France, June 19, 1864. It was presented by "Lady DeHogton and other English ladies." The flag was brought back by Semmes when he returned to the Confederate States and was inherited by his grandchildren, Raphael Semmes, III and Mrs. Eunice Semmes Thorington.
