CELEBRATE ALABAMA ARCHIVES WEEK
AT THE ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES OCTOBER 11-18
October is American Archives Month. The Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) invites the public to celebrate Alabama Archives Week, October 11-18, 2008, to learn more about Alabama history and the role of archives in preserving and promoting history. Highlights of the week include a Tips, Tools, and Treasures presentation (An Introduction to Alabama State Publications), a Mark Your Place in History bookmark contest, and an ArchiTreats presentation of Treasures from the Archives Vaults.
Join us Saturday morning, October 11, at 10:00 to learn about the state publications collections of the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH). Archivist Mike Breedlove will discuss the wealth of information available in publications of Alabama state agencies, and offer tips for locating them using the ADAH catalog and finding aids. Particular emphasis will be placed on accessing state publications through the internet. This is the tenth program in the Tips, Tools, and Treasures series offered by the Archives on the second Saturday of each month.
On Tuesday, October 14, the department will unveil the winners of the Mark Your Place in History Bookmark Contest. More than 900 students from fourth-grade classrooms across the state submitted designs featuring historical event from Alabama’s past. Five winning entries will be announced on the Archives website on October 14. The Alabama Department of Tourism has designated 2009 as the Year of Alabama History and will provide a grant to print 50,000 bookmarks illustrated with the winning designs. The Archives website will also feature the winning drawings and all of the entries will be displayed in the Archives Hands-On Gallery during the current school year.
Archives Week activities will continue on Thursday, October 16, from 12:10 to 12:50 with the monthly ArchiTreat’s program, Treasures From the Archives Vaults. The program, in the Archives’ Alabama Power Auditorium, will feature Archives’ staff members Dr. Ed Bridges, Dr. Mike Breedlove, Mr. Bob Cason, and Ms. Cynthia Luckie, discussing some of their favorite artifacts and records from the Archives collections. Look for more information about Archives events at other state archival repositories and organizations throughout October.
