Drove under an assumed name until his parents found out. Won his first national NASCAR "Modified Special Crown" in 1962, won again in 1963, and in 1964 won NASCAR's Modified Crown. Raced on the Grand National circuit, SCCA's TransAm series, and in 1973 raced in Indianapolis 500. Campaign an independent Chevrolet Chevelle against the factory teams. Scored 84 Winston Cup victories, Most Popular Driver for NASCAR's Winston Cup division in 1971, 72, 73 and 1974, won the 1983 Winston Cup title, and in 1988 received NASCAR's Award of Excellence.
