40. Fort Toulouse / Fort Jackson
Wetumpka, Elmore County
In 1717, the French constructed Fort Toulouse to facilitate trade with the Creek Indians. During the Creek War of 1813-1814, the Americans built a fort at the same site and named it Fort Jackson. The fort served as Andrew Jackson's base camp, and at this site Creek Indians ceded 23 million acres of land in the Treaty of Fort Jackson.
