Herbert Anthony Sklenar was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Michael
Joseph and Alice Spicka Sklenar.
He received his elementary education in Omaha and graduated from Benson
High School of Omaha. He received his B.S. Degree in Business Administration,
Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Omaha and he earned an M.B.A. Degree at Harvard University.
Herbert Sklenar is married to Eleanor Vincenz, and they are the parents of two
daughters.
He was employed in high executive positions with Parkersburg-Aetna
Corporation 1956-63, Marmac Corporation 1963-66; Boise-Cascade
Corporation 1966-67; Cudahy Company 1967-72; and Vulcan
Materials Company of Birmingham, 1972-97. At Vulcan, he bacame President and C.E.O. in 1986 and was elected Chairman and C.E.O. in 1992. Upon his retirement in 1997, he was elected Chairman of the Board Emeritus.
He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Temple-Inland Inc., of Austin, Texas. Previously, he served as a Director of AmSouth Bancorporation and Protective Life Corporation, both of Birmingham.
Mr. Skelnar currently serves on the Advisory Board of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library and is a Trustee and Director of: Birmingham-Southern College, Alabama Ear Institute, Leadership Birmingham, Leadership Alabama, Region 2020, and the Birmingham Committee on Foreign Relations. He has served in numerous other civic capacities in Birmingham and the State of Alabama.
