The following biographical sketch was compiled at the time of induction into the Academy in 1974.
J. Craig Smith, Chairman of the Board of Avondale Mills, contributed to the economic
development of Alabama though his activities in industry and finance. He was also a director of the
Alabama Financial Group, the Birmingham Trust National Bank, General Machinery Corporation,
Protective Life Insurance Company and South Central Bell Telephone Company, all in Birmingham;
and Illinois Central Industries and Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. He served as president of the
Alabama Textile Manufacturers Association, American Textile Manufacturers Institute, International
Federation of Cotton and Allied Textile Industries, and the National Cotton Council of America.
In addition to serving in the business sector, he was president of the Alabama Safety Council,
is chairman of the Board of the Eye Foundation, and is a member of the Board of Visitors of the
University of Alabama School of Commerce. He also served on the Executive Committee of
the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, the Advisory Board of the University of Alabama Medical
Center and on the Alabama Water Improvement Commission and the Alabama Education Study
Commission. He is now deceased.
