Mary Texas Hurt Garner was born at Scottsboro, Alabama, October 3, 1928. She was the daughter of Frank Paul and Allie (Snodgrass) Hurt; granddaughter of the late William and Texas (Hess) Snodgrass, and the late Frank D. Mary and (Shelton) Hurt. Mrs. Garner was educated in the public schools of Jackson County, Alabama, and received A.B. and LL.B. degrees from George Washington University, Washington D.C., in 1949 and 1952. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and Kappa Beta Pi Legal Fraternity. She was admitted to the Alabama Bar Association by examination and practiced law one year in Scottsboro before becoming a member of the state Attorney General's office. She resigned this position to become a candidate for the office of Secretary of State in 1954 and was elected State Auditor in 1958 and State Treasurer in 1962.
She married William E. Garner of Ozark, Alabama, November 3, 1956. They had a daughter, Mary Texas, born on August 2, 1959, and a son, William Texas Garner, born on August 9, 1967.
