1972 December: The Alabama Shakespeare Festival began as a summer stock program in Anniston. In 1985 it moved to Montgomery into a new performing arts complex endowed by Mr. and Mrs. Winton Blount. By 2007 it was the sixth largest Shakespeare festival in the world.
