The Alabama Historical Association, founded in 1947, is the oldest statewide historical society in Alabama. The Association sponsors The Alabama Review, a quarterly journal of Alabama history published by the University of Alabama Press; two Newsletters each year; a state historical marker program; the James F. Sulzby Publication Award for the best book on Alabama history; the Coley Award for the best work on local history; the Virginia Van Der Veer Hamilton Award for contributions to Alabama history; the Milo B. Howard Award for the best article published in The Alabama Review in a two-year period; the James Ray Kuykendall Award, a local historical society recognition award; and the Clinton Jackson and Evelyn Coley Research Grant for graduate school research.
The annual two-day meeting in April features talks, papers, and tours of historical sites and houses. The fall pilgrimage is a Saturday picnic with a tour of a historical site in Alabama.
